Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is located only 10 km (6 miles) away from city center. The base imitated the natural residence of giant pandas. Because the staff want to create the best environment for breeding. After successfully breeding, they release the pandas into the wild.

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding Exploration TourThe giant pandas are rare animals in the entire world. They have won the praise of “ Chinese National Treasure”. These lovely creatures are popular all over the world. The giant pandas are only found in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. Whereas the number is less than 2,000. And 70% of them live within Sichuan. Thus Sichuan has become the most popular place to visit the giant pandas.

The base not only takes care of the giant pandas, but also take care of other wild animals such as black-necked cranes and white storks ect. The area covers 92 acres with 96% of vegetation. Currently, there are more than 20 precious species being cared for there. The environment is really good with fresh air and various plants. Lots of fresh bamboos are for the giant pandas. Besides, the base is under the plan of extending the area to 500 acres.

The facilities inside the base are in good condition. It includes a fodder room, dormitories and a medical center. Furthermore, a museum along with laboratories and a training center exist.

The Giant Panda Museum was open in 1993. It was for the purpose of scientific education. Moreover, it can also raise the awareness of protecting the wild animals and their environment. The museum is the world’s sole theme museum for precious and endangered. It includes the Giant Panda Hall, the Butterfly Hall and the Vertebrate Hall.

What’s more, many exhibitions of samples and rare pictures are available inside the halls. Over 2,140 different samples and 800 materials can be seen. These stuff contain examples of birds, amphibians, reptiles and insects and so on. In addition, thousands of books and documents record the animals as well.

A great number of plants and as many as ten thousand clumps of bamboos and bushes have been cultivated to provide for the animals’ diet and habitat. The base is planned to be expanded by another 3,000 mus (500 acres) of land on which to simulate a natural environment in order to prepare the giant pandas bred for release into the wild.

Take line 3 to get off at Dongwuyuan Station. Then get out of exit B and take the bus 198 or 198a to get there.

  • By bus

1.Take bus 9, 18, 25, 32, 64, 64 Express, 70, 85, 87, 99, 146, 150, 156a, 156b, 166, 193, 527, 650, 1030 or 1035. Get off at Dongwuyuan (Chengdu Zoo) Bus Station. Then take bus 198 or 198a to get there.

2. Take bus 87, 198, 198a, or 655 to get off at Xiongmao Jidi ( Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding) Station.

3. Take bus 60 or 87. Get off at Longqing Road Shulong Crossing. Then walk along the Panda Avenue for about 15 minutes to get there.

It costs around CNY 40 from downtown.


Before tourists can pay CNY 2,000 in cash to hold a cub to take pictures for one minute. The money is for donation to giant pandas research. And visitors can make the reservation with the panda base.

However, all the related activities of getting close to the giant pandas have stopped. Currently, tourists can not hold a cub to take pictures. And the reopening time stays unknown.
