Larung Ngarig Buddhist Academy

Welcome to explore Larung Ngarig Buddhist Academy! Larung Gar or the Larung Valley is a town in Sêrtar County of Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan of China. Larung Gar is “བླ་རུང་སྒར” in Tibetan and “bla rung sgar” in Wylie. It means Golden Horse. The place is in a remote valley on the Tibetan Plateau with an elevation of about 4,000 meters. It is in the historical Kham region of the Garze Prefecture. The religious Larung Ngarig Buddhist Academy in the town is the largest in the world.

The Larung Five Sciences Buddhist Academy is 780 km far away from Chengdu in the Larung Gar. The academy is home to more than 40,000 Tibetan monks and nuns. It was established in 1980 by Jigme Phuntsok. He is a lama of the Nyingma tradition. Nuns and monks there live separately by age and sex. Besides, there is a winding road between the houses of monks and nuns. They only appear together in the assembly hall.

The whole picture of the academy is very spectacular. The houses are mainly in red made of wood.

Establishment of the Buddhist Academy

Previously there were only 32 followers when Jigme Phuntsok started the academy. It was not until 1985 that the government officially recognized it. In 1997, The academy got its official name- Seda Larung Wuming Tibetan Buddhist Monastery. Since then it has become the largest Buddhist institute in the world slowly.
