Shanghai (Chinese: 上海) is one of the biggest cities in China and a directly controlled municipalty by central government. It is one of the most populated city in the world with a population estimated to be 24.15 million in 2016.As a global financial center ,transport hub and the world’s biggest port container,Shanghai is located in the Yangtze River and seated on the south edge of the estuary of the Yangtze in the central portion of the East China coast. It is next to Jiangsu and Zhejiang province to the north ,south and west, bounded by the East China Sea.
Because of its favourable port location and economic potential,Shanghai turned into an important city in the 19th century. It was one of the five treaty ports forced open to foreginers during the first opium war bettwen China and Britain. In the 1930s,the city flourished as the center of commerce connecting China and other parts of the world(mostly western countries) and become the main financial hub of the Asia-Pacific region. However, its global importance faded with the takeover of the mainland by the Communist Party since it was only limited to other socialist countries. Its re-development returned with the economic reforms introduced by Deng Xiaoping.
Today,Shanghai has been considered as the example of the booming economy of mainland China, famous for its Lujiazui skyline, and museums and historic buildings along with The Bund, as well as the City God Temple and the Yu Garden.
